COACH ELIGIBILITY
"Coach" refers to any member of the athletic staff that is sitting on the bench and has direct athlete contact.
- All OSBA coaches will be required annually to register as Team Staff through RAMP.
- Each coaching staff member must be a member in good standing with Ontario Basketball (OBA).
- Each coaching staff member is required to have a NCCP number.
Screening Requirements
- 9All coaches and bench personnel must complete and submit a Vulnerable Sector Screening Check to the OSBA prior to the start of the season, provided by the league. The PDF will be required to be uploaded to RAMP during registration.
- All coaches and bench personnel must complete Safe Sport Training module developed by the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC). There is no cost to take the Safe Sport Training. Training completion will be validated by OSBA administrative staff through viewing your NCCP transcript.
OSBA will require all bench personnel to complete the Safe Sport Training module every 12 months aligning with Canada Basketball requirements for Nationals. OSBA administration will check transcripts mid-August to determine who may need renewal for the start of the new fiscal year (September).
For 2023-2024 Administration will send emails out to coaches who require renewal in September. This will then align for the following years to receive a reminder email in August and complete the training within the month of September.
Gender Requirements
- A minimum of one (1) member of each coaching staff (this does not include managers and trainers) is of the same gender of the team they are coaching.
- The roles of each coach must be clearly defined (not just title).
- Specific requirements for women's teams:
- If the head coach is a male, the assistant coach AND manager must be a female.
- The female assistant coach is not to be given the role of assistant coach in name only.
Certification Requirements
Once registration is complete, Ontario Basketball Certification Team will connect with the Program Directors so that a plan can be developed to meet the certification requirements should the coach not meet the requirements at the time of registration.
If these standards are not met, the OSBA member program must show:
- The pathway for development that is being taken for completion by the coach (This will include future NCCP courses and other professional development opportunities).
- The steps taken to find coaches who would have complied.
- The steps that will be taken to increase the pool of coaches for the future.
- Non-compliance may be subject to a fine to the program and/or coach.
Questions regarding certification should be sent to certification@basketball.on.ca
