SOUTHWEST ACADEMY (WOMEN)

3 POINTS

1. An extremely versatile roster gives Southwest the ability to match up with their opponent in a variety of ways. The Forest have size inside with Miranda Vanderwal (6’5), Sammie Martin (6’3), Emily Payne (6’2) and Cheyenne Rowe (6’2), and length on the wings with Hayley Woods (6’0), and Lemyah Hylton (6’0).

2. Knock down shooter, Maggie Denys, will be Southwest’s Swiss Army knife this season. Denys is an extension on the coaching staff when she is on the court with her tremendous leadership skills, composure and a high basketball IQ.

3. Southwest Academy brings back seven returning players, and adds some new recruits going into their third season in the OSBA. The combination of size, athleticism and experience make the Forest a contender to watch throughout the season.

WOMAN ON THE SPOT

Sammie Martin (6'3 F from Sudbury) will be an integral piece of the Southwest Academy puzzle this season. Following Martin’s breakout campaign last season, she went on to win a Silver Medal as a member of the U18 Canadian Women’s Junior National Team. Martin’s unique combination of size, versatility and skill-set allow Southwest to play in a variety of styles.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Southwest Academy is entering their third year in the OSBA, and have high expectations with seven returning players and a solid recruiting class joining the squad. The Forest have a versatile combination of size, athleticism and leadership on the roster that make them one of the most exciting teams to watch this season
