Lincoln Prep comes back to defeat Durham Elite in OSBA Game of the Week #1

Post defence was the early thing to watch as neither team could buy a basket underneath early. Durham Elite capitalized on numerous Lincoln turnovers early in the quarter, led by 6’2” forward Julia Chadwick (Class of 2018) who had a couple early baskets along with a couple of blocked shots. A lot of foul trouble in the quarter for Durham Elite testing their depth early in the game with 5’7” point guard Keishana Washington (Class of 2018) and 6’0” guard Kylee O’Hara (Class of 2018) picking up 2 first quarter fouls. Lincoln received a first quarter spark off the bench from 5’8” guard Keturah Balabyekkubo (Class of 2019) with 5 first quarter points along with 6’2” guard/forward Niyah Becker (Class of 2018) contributing 5 points of her own, and after one quarter, Lincoln held an 18-13 lead.

The same theme continued in the beginning of the second quarter with a lot of physicality on both sides early, and both coaches being tested with the amount of foul trouble they found themselves in. Lincoln began to share the ball and force turnovers, led by contributions from both Becker and 6’3” forward/guard Brynn Masikewich (Class of 2019). Durham fell behind 28-23 midway through the quarter then Washington hit two three pointers, including a fancy step-back three, along with a steal and layup in transition. Washington was helped out by 5’10” guard Rebecca Demeke (Class of 2020) contributing with a couple buckets in the quarter. Durham Elite ended up finishing the second quarter on a 19-6 run and took a 44-34 lead into the half.

It was a slow start to the third quarter, until Masikewich went off for 7 quick points to help cut the Durham lead down early. Continuing to receive solid contributions from both Masikewich and Becker, Lincoln slowly continued to cut into the lead. Durham Elite continued to experience foul trouble with Washington picking up her third earlier in the quarter, as Lincoln continued to chip away. Balabyekkubo continued to be a bench spark for Lincoln with 5 more points in the 3rd quarter as the teams continued to exchange blows back and forth. Durham clinged to a 67-64 lead after the 3rd quarter in what was an entertaining back and forth affair.

Lincoln extended the use of a trap into the final quarter, and forced a couple of turnovers to go on an 11-5 run. Lincoln’s defence seemed to be too much for Durham, as they went through most of the fourth quarter without Washington and O’Hara who were sitting with foul trouble. Lincoln jumped out to an 80-69 with around four and a half minutes left. In the end, the duo of Becker and Masikewich were too much for Durham Elite, as they combined for 42 points in an 87-74 victory for Lincoln Prep.
