Capital Courts holds off Vaughan for 69-52 victory in OSBA Game of the Week

In the early going both teams were very aggressive on the boards, with Vaughan jumping out on a quick 10-2 run to begin the game led by two three-pointers from 5’5” guard Shaunae Brown (Class of 2019). Capital Courts began to turn up the intensity defensively in the first quarter forcing a couple of turnovers and converting transition opportunities. Capital Courts continued to maintain this same defensive pressure for the remainder of the quarter and took the lead after the first thanks to 5’9” point guard Isabella Gaudet (Class of 2020) who had four points to go along with a steal in the quarter. Capital Courts led 17-16 after one.

The second quarter began a lot like the first one ended, with Capital Courts forcing turnovers and converting them into points, beginning the quarter on a 9-2 run. The highlight came early in the quarter made by 6’0” guard Merissah Russell (Class of 2020), coming up with a steal and going behind the back before getting inside to get to the line. Vaughan got a lot of opportunities with offensive rebounds, but were unable to convert them into points, and struggled with their outside shooting. The quarter was taken over by both Russell and 6’3” Cassandra Joli-Coeur (Class of 2020), who picked up seven points in the quarter to go with six from Russell. Capital Courts ended the second quarter outscoring Vaughan 25-7 to take a 42-23 lead into halftime.

Vaughan began the second half very aggressive on offence and started off on a 16-5 run to cut the lead down to nine capped by a long three-point shot made by 5’9” Teija Wahid-Wareham (Class of 2018). Vaughan turned up the intensity defensively, forcing multiple turnovers and continuing to press the Capital Courts players into mental mistakes throughout the quarter. Capital Courts managed to slow down the charge being made by Vaughan, and kept a 13-point lead heading into the fourth.

Capital Courts was without Russell while she sat with four fouls during a sloppy start to the fourth but they received very solid contributions from 6’0” guard Marie-Laeticia Ziba (Class of 2021). Vaughan continued to compete but couldn't convert on their opportunities. The iron-woman of the game definitely gets awarded to Vaughan's 5’4” point guard Tamiya Francis (Class of 2019), who didn’t leave the floor once throughout the entire game while leading her team from the point. Capital Courts ended the game with a 69-52 victory.
