Athlete Institute outlasts Ridley in the late Game of the Week matchup

Athlete Institute defends homecourt with an 87-77 win over a short-handed Ridley team

ATHLETE INSTITUTE 87 (10-2) DEF. RIDLEY COLLEGE 77 (4-5)

It was a slow scoring start with the early highlight supplied by Athlete Institute’s (6-10 C, 2019) Ben Hendriks throwing in a two-handed dunk for the Bears and (6-7 F, 2019) Jevonnie Scott on the other end flew in with a massive block. But Ridley hung tough led by the post play of (6-10 C, 2019) Jaden Bediako and (5-10 PG, 2019) Noah Wharton whose smooth jumper gave Ridley a brief five-point advantage. Ridley continued their strong play on the offensive boards and finished under the rim, outworking Athlete Institute for a 18-16 lead headed into the second frame.

Charles Bediako (6-10 F, 2021) rolled his ankle in the first minute of the second and went to the bench leaving Ridley with just two available reserves but he was able to return. AI’s Addison Patterson (6-7 G, 2020) picked up his intensity in the second quarter and drove to the hoop and hung in the air for a finger-roll finish.

A Sam Rautins (6-3 G, 2018) three then a Luguentz Dort (6-5 G, 2018) basket plus the foul gave the Bears their first lead as Ridley began to tire with their short bench. Sam Rautins looked like the best shooter in the country as he caught fire in the frame, repeatedly drilling threes and keeping his Bears ahead 38-35 at halftime.

Retro night rolled on in the second half in Orangeville as both teams traded threes through the first half of the third quarter. Jevonnie Scott threw down a dunk in transition then a Dort shot from distance put the Bears up double-digits as this game started to escape the Tigers. Ridley College played a tough fourth quarter but could not make up the deficit and Athlete Institute kept their double-digit advantage, finishing with an 87-77 home victory.
