Orangeville Prep takes care of Southwest Academy 97-79 in OSBA Game of the Week #1

Orangeville Prep handles Southwest Academy 97-79 in first game of OSBA Game of the Week doubleheader.

ORANGEVILLE PREP 97 (9-1) DEF. SOUTHWEST 79 (1-9)

It was a sloppy start to the game as the Orangeville Prep Bears hosted Southwest Academy on "Throwback Night" and the first of the OSBA Game of the Week double-header, as both teams were having a problem hanging onto the ball. 6’8” small forward Ignas Brazdeikis (Class of 2018) led the way in the early going, playing tight perimeter defence on the Southwest guards and forcing several turnovers in the process. Brazdeikis ended up finishing the first quarter with 13 points and 6 steals. Around the midway point of the quarter, Southwest switched to a 1-2-2 zone press which had some measure of success, forcing a couple of turnovers. 6’3” Josh Massela (Class of 2018) led the way scoring-wise for Southwest in the quarter. Southwest also had solid contributions from 6’9” Thomas Kennedy (Class of 2019) who finished the opening quarter with 5 points. Orangeville Prep held a 29-20 lead at the end of the first.

The second quarter began very similar to the first with turnovers and sloppy play on both ends. Brazdeikis continued to play up on the perimeter, forcing a couple more steals and the University of Michigan commit ended up finishing the first half with 29 points to lead all scorers. The Bears continued their strong play in the quarter, beginning to break the press of Southwest more and more, along with a large collection of offensive rebounds, led by 6’10” Joe Jones (Class of 2018). Southwest wasn’t able to take advantage of many of the mistakes made by the Bears and at the end of the first half, it was 51-37 in favour of Orangeville.

Orangeville Prep began the second half on a 24-9 run, just cruising right along at this point in the game. As the game progressed, they flexed their muscle on Southwest. Brazdeikis continued to shine with 8 points in the quarter. Southwest struggled to execute throughout the game, as their zone press lost its effectiveness and the score after three quarters being 84-51 for the Bears.

In the fourth, a lot of playing time was had for younger Orangeville players looking to develop their games. The assist of the game came on a fast break for Southwest where Thomas Kennedy dished it behind the back for Josh Massela for an easy layup. Southwest played very well most of the fourth, and went on an 11-0 run late in the quarter, with the Bears playing mostly backups. Orangeville Prep took it by a final score of 97-79 and improved to 9-1 on the season.
