OSBA SEASON PREVIEW: Bill Crothers S.S (men)

OSBA PRE-SEASON PREVIEW: BILL CROTHERS S.S

Bill Crothers S.S is coming off a very promising 2016-2017 season. Finishing the regular season with a record of 13-8, the Colts managed to finish top-four in the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA). but they were upset in the OSBA quarter finals where they were upset by Lincoln Prep in a nail-biting 83-79 loss.

The Colts now enter a transition phase in their program both in terms of their roster and coaching staff. The program welcomes new head coach Marvin Spencer and assistant coach Kirk Salesman to BCSS who together will shape the direction of the Colts for years to come. Not only has five-year Head Coach Charles Hantoumakos moved on to coaching Athlete Institute in Orangeville, but the senior-heavy roster from a season ago is losing their entire starting lineup and a few key players off the bench including Stefan Smith (6’1 G) who will be playing at Vermont University, Emmanuel Miller (6’6 G) who will be transferring to LaLumiere Academy in La Porte, Indiana, Jayden Coke (6’4 SG) and Cole Lawrence (6’11 C) will play at Junior Colleges south of the border, Jamal Mayali (6’3 PG/G) will be a rookie at McGill University, and lastly Andreas Skenderija (6’6 F) is also departing.

The program has added a great deal of youth and quickness to their roster that could be standouts in years to come. Key additions to the Colts revamped roster include; class of 2020 (6’8 G/F) Kwaku Agyapagong who will provide both length and athleticism around the basket, class of 2020 (G) Khalid Long who is known as a sharp shooter and will help space the floor, class of 2020 (6’5 SG) Jaylen Spencer, and class of 2020 (6’5 G/F) Kenny Ngassoue, an extremely athletic and active guard who is a member of the Canadian National team for high jump. These young recruits will be relied on heavily in their rookie seasons to make an immediate impact.

Crothers also returns 2020 (6'6 PF) Paris Shand, a member of the U17 Canadian National Team, who was a big part of Crothers' success last season.  Shand, along with the only two seniors, Juwan Beckford and Jacob Fraser, will carry a heavy load for Crothers this season and need to bring leadership and steady performance to a very young Bill Crother squad.

It would be easy to classify this upcoming season for the BCSS Colts as a rebuilding year, but their program does not believe so. If the young, talented core and new recruits can quickly come together and develop a new team identity, the Colts could surprise a lot of their opponents this upcoming season.
