OSBA SEASON PREVIEW: KING'S CHRISTIAN COLLEGIATE (Women)

OSBA Pre-Season Preview: Kings Christian Collegiate (Women)

King’s Christian Collegiate Cavaliers were incredibly successful in the 2016-17 Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA) regular season, finishing first place overall with a record of 10-3. The King’s came up short in the playoffs though, losing to Lincoln Prep 60-53 in the semifinals. With that being said, the team has plans to make a deeper playoff push this year. “The core of the team is older and more experienced and we expect an even better 2017-18 season,” said Head Coach Zelimir Stevanovic.

King’s Christian look to build from experience as they enter the upcoming season. The team did not spend much time retooling their roster during the off-season compared to numerous other programs in the league. They only added three players to their roster, but each athlete will provide great depth to their already talented roster. The three additions are:

Class of 2020 Margaret Lovtsova (5’9 G), a sophomore who adds a basketball IQ as well a great perimeter shot to the program.

Class of 2021 Katie Hartman (G), a freshman who led her Ontario Basketball club team, Oakville Vytis, to back-to-back Division 1 provincial championships. Her length and athletic ability are assets for King’s on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

Class of 2021 Teah Stupar (6’2 F/C), another freshman and Hartman’s Vytis teammate. Stupar's strength inside as well as her passing ability make her a strong asset for the team.

King’s Christian parts ways with only two key players this upcoming season; Ellen Ougrinov (5’10 G) is playing at the University of Victoria while Ayanna Gooden (5’5 G) is pursuing a collegiate soccer career at Alabama A&M. Although they both will be missed, the team is confident that their recruits and returning players can come together and do great things on the court. Key King’s returnees that are due to have a big season this year include:

Laeticia Amihere (6’3 F): The 2017 OSBA Women’s League MVP spent the summer continuing to develop her game with the Canadian national team program. She is a unique and virtually unstoppable talent on both sides of the ball.

Christina Morra (6’3 C): After representing Ontario this past summer and winning silver at the Canada Summer Games, Morra's game has continued to flourish, notably through improvements to her mid-range game. The 2017 OSBA Women’s Second Team All-Star is poised to have another outstanding season this fall.

Mide Oriyomi (6’0 G/F): The Hamilton, Ont. native also competed with Team Ontario at the Canada Summer Games this summer. She has improved both defensively and offensively and will be a huge contributor to the King's Christian Collegiate program this season.

Lauren Boers (5’11 F): Boers worked on her game tirelessly throughout the summer, which included attending the Basketball Without Borders Americas camp in the Bahamas, where she was named tournament All-Star for her strong play. She is set to have a phenomenal senior year.

Tiena Neale (5’11 F): Neale has also worked tirelessly on her game this summer and will surprise a lot of people with her athleticism, shooting touch and ability to take the ball to the basket. She is ready to have a breakout season this upcoming year.

The Cavaliers are definitely set to be a dominating force this upcoming season. Do they have what it takes to win an OSBA Championship? King’s Christian Collegiate Cavaliers are a team that everyone should keep their eyes on for years to come.
