With the weather finally doing the teams a favour, Vaughan SS Prep were able to travel to Father Henry Carr to compete in the Game of the Week after being postponed 2 days earlier. After the delay the players were eager to start the 2017 portion of their OSBA season and they did not disappoint; putting on a show for the fans that went down to the wire. Vaughan has struggled throughout their 7 game skid while Father Henry Carr have started a winning streak and looked to bring their record to .500 with a win.

Although the game had begun, both squads had trouble getting their rhythm as they neither side could get a basket to fall. Henry Carr were the first to get their legs under them and score the first few baskets. Vaughan would eventually find their form but only after trailing 11-2 mid-way through the first quarter. Vaughan’s James Canlas would take the lead of offense (finished with 25 pts) often dishing out assists or attacking the basket himself. The game was quickly tied at 13 and both sides would go back and forth for the remainder of the quarter. It seemed like Henry Carr would be taking a 3-point lead into the 2nd until Ben Kwawukumey scored a tough layup while getting fouled as he fell on his back.

The score was even at 18 to start the 2nd and Vaughan used their momentum to jump out early. They attacked the basket early and often put pressure on the opposition during their 13-4 run. Now on the losing end for the first time of the game, Henry Carr would have to increase their defensive pressure to cut into the lead. On the offensive end Vaughan’s Mychael Paulo (finished with 33 pts, 5 assts) would make a couple important baskets and brought his team back within 5-points at 35-30. Vaughan would respond with another 15-4 run but went ice cold for the last 2 minutes and Henry Carr would once again close the gap. This time it would be Henry Carr that ended the frame on highlight-worthy slam by Denier Campbell that left the score at 45-40.

With momentum constantly swinging, the 2nd half would be no different. This time around however it was Father Henry Carr that came of the break with their offense on a tear. The hot hand was now back to favouring the home team and opening the 3rd on a 14-3 run allowed them to retrieve the lead they had lost earlier. Vaughan continued to battle but Henry Carr would be the ones to take a small 2-point lead into the final quarter.

62-60 was the score going into the 4th and Henry Carr would continue keep their pesky opponents away until Vaughan caught up with important baskets from key players like Joseph Thomas (finished with 22 pts) and Kascius Small-Martin (finished with 12 pts) and knotted the game at 71. The aggressive play was ratcheted up on both sides and both teams found themselves in the bonus with well over 4 minutes left.  From that point Henry Carr’s big-bodied forward Anthony McNish turned his game up and imposed his will on defenders. He cleaned the boards for offensive rebounds and muscled his way into the paint for an easy score. McNish finished the contest with a big 27 points. Mychael Paulo continued his scoring brilliance and the combo of Paulo and McNish would lead Father Henry Carr to a hard-fought 93-84 victory. Paulo and McNish combined for a staggering 60 points.

Vaughan S.S has been competitive in the majority of their contests and they’ll be disappointed that their record doesn’t reflect their play.  Now having completed their run of 4 consecutive away games, they’ll be glad to host Southwest Academy on January 24th and play in front of their home fans. Tip-off is at 6pm. Father Henry Carr are right in the middle of the pack and on the rise following their 3rd win in a row. Their rough start hasn’t hampered them too much and a win against Ridley College on January 24th will help them continue their way up the rankings. Tip-off is scheduled for 5pm.
