Alongside the boys team, the King’s Christian Collegiate girls basketball team will be joining the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association for their first year. Coached by Eric Bulthuis, head coach of the girls basketball team and the athletic director at KCC. Bulthuis and his team won the 2015 OFSAA Basketball Championships in the “AA” division with only 10 girls.

“We were a very young team last year with five of our 10 players in grade nine,” said Bulthuis, “Everyone will be coming back this year and we are looking to build on some of the success that we were blessed with last year.” Within the past year the KCC girls team has gone through a makeover, inviting five players to the team last year, two of the five girls will be graduating. In addition this season the KCC girls will be welcoming four new girls to the team. Bulthuis says, “We anticipate having talent on our team and will focus on developing efficient team play.”

The KCC girls have some secret weapons on their bench, acquiring some of Ontario's best female athletes such as Lauren Boers, Christina Morra, amd Laeticia Amihere who are all Team Ontario Alumni. Lauren Boers was an avid player on the Team Ontario U15 girls team last year, “Boer’s ability to shoot the ball from anywhere on the floor and her strength on the defensive end are her strengths,” said Bulthuis, “She can handle the ball and defend multiple positions.”

Morra, who also played alongside Boers and Amihere last year on the U15 Ontario team has also participated in the 2016 National Championships as a U17 player. “Christina’s strength inside and her athleticism makes her very difficult to defend,” comments Boers, “Her ability to rebound the ball allows her to affect the game on both the defensive and offensive ends of the floor.”

This summer Amihere took part on the U17 Women’s World Championships representing Canada in Zaragoza, Spain, putting on an amazing display of her athleticism. Amihere also played alongside Morra on the U17 Ontario team. “Amihere’s length and ability to handle the ball make her a mismatch for any opposition,” says Bulthuis, “Rebounding and finishing around the rim are her strengths.”

Joining the OSBA to work on the development of his players Bulthuis explains that at KCC encourages its athletes and students to pursue excellence for the Glory of God. Looking forward to starting the season, Bulthuis believes that the OSBA will help his team to be challenged at a higher degree by providing them with the structure they need.
