As announced earlier this year the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association will be hosting its first girls basketball league. With eight teams in counting, participating this season will be Karen Bremner, head coach for the Guelph Prep girls, and her team. “The boys league was a huge success last year. We’re really excited to see girls basketball get the same opportunity, as they are very deserving of recognition,” says Bremner.

Guelph Prep is made up of student athletes who attend Bishop Macdonell C.S.S. for academics and trains at the University of Guelph. The Jr. Gryphons are a big program that manages club teams and house leagues as well. “Our involvement with the OSBA adds an excellence stream that didn’t exist in our prior program,” tells Bremner, “We are very excited to be the first of this nature and will represent the Jr. Gryphons well.”

Bremner being a kid at heart believes that the OSBA will allow kids to have a more balanced lifestyle as student athletes, “I’m really big on kids being kids. For a long time a lot of kids had to run from practice to practice without any down time in between.” Being really passionate about sports, specifically about high performance and the value it can add to someone’s life. Bremner is happy that the OSBA will combine the best of both worlds for her kids: supporting their academics and the time to satisfy their social and emotional needs that only friends and family can fulfill.

With the season approaching soon, Bremner is also excited to showcase three deserving players. Jada Grannum is a highly skilled defensewoman who can defend the full length of the court at 14 years old, Mya Iriah is a 15 year old guard who is a dynamic rim attacker, and Mackenzie Obermayer the 16 year old forward has the super abilities of a good rebounder and super screener.

“The sky is the limit,” says Bremner, “It’s hard to predict what the future holds but building on progress and learning from our mistakes will ultimately see the growth and development of our athletes.”
