The OSBA Game of the Week (GOTW) schedule features three top matchups in both the Men's and Women's divisions this week. It all starts on Tuesday with St. Jude’s Academy taking on King’s Christian Collegiate in the women's West Division. Simultaneously, Royal Crown faces Hodan Prep in a men's cross-division matchup. The GOTW action concludes with a thrilling showdown in the men's East Division as the No. 2 and No. 3-seeded teams, William Academy and Crestwood Prep, face off on Saturday afternoon in North York.
St. Jude’s enters the game at 7-2 and is ranked No. 2 in the West. The team is coming off a huge win against Orangeville Prep last Thursday, winning 73-61. That marked back-to-back wins for St. Jude’s, which has bounced back since losing to Crestwood Prep at the end of January. St. Jude’s is led by Chante Murray, who is currently No. 1 on the OSBA women's MVP watch list. Murray has been performing at a high level on both ends of the court, averaging 21.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Against a top opponent like King’s Christian, the star guard can certainly bolster her MVP résumé with a strong performance.
King’s Christian holds a 5-4 record and is ranked No. 3 in the West, just behind St. Jude’s. The team is coming off a tough loss against Crestwood, 83-64, and has a chance to bounce back in a key division matchup against St. Jude’s. King’s Christian has no shortage of offensive talent. The team is led by Carletta Bennett, No. 5 on the OSBA women's MVP watch list, who is averaging 17.4 points per game. However, King’s also spreads the ball efficiently, with Gabby Morash, Alex Newson, and Bennett all recording 15 points in their last game against Crestwood. This balanced attack is difficult to defend throughout an entire game.
Tuesday’s West Division matchup showcases two of the Division’s top teams battling for crucial points with the playoffs on the horizon.
The Lions enter Tuesday’s matchup at 8-1, ranked No. 1 in the East. Royal Crown beat William Academy in a thriller in its most recent OSBA game, winning 66-65 in Cobourg. Crown kept that momentum going during Grind Session Canada play, defeating Fort Erie 79-69 on home court. Crown guard Justus Haseley earned Player of the Game honours against Fort Erie for his 24- point, six-assist, five-rebound performance in the win. Haseley, ranked No. 8 on the MVP watch list, has been outstanding for the Lions as of late, as he was also Crown’s leading scorer in the win against William Academy with 12 points. With a win against Hodan Prep, Royal Crown can continue to build a commanding lead in the division as the playoffs approach.
Hodan holds a 4-2 record and is ranked No. 2 in the West Division. The team is coming off a huge win against No. 1 Ridley College last Tuesday, winning 96-93 in a thriller. Tonight’s game offers an opportunity to knock off another top-seeded opponent, this time in the East Division. Hodan demonstrated just how dynamic its offense is against Ridley College, with three players scoring 17 or more points. Josiah Roberts and Zachary Downer led the way, scoring 22 and 20 points, respectively. Against a team like Royal Crown, Hodan will have to replicate this type of efficiency on offense to stay competitive and secure a win.
This matchup has no shortage of storylines. Will Royal Crown continue to stack up wins, or will Hodan Prep take down a second No. 1 seed in as many games?
William Academy enters Saturday’s matchup with a 5-4 record, ranked No. 2 in the East. The team has played a pair of extremely close games recently—losing by one point to Royal Crown and beating J. Addison by one point. The win against J. Addison moved the team above .500, but they face another tough challenge against a Crestwood team on a hot streak. Leading the charge on offence is recent Butler University commit Efeosa Oliogu. Ranked No. 4 on the MVP watch list, Oliogu has been on a tear recently, scoring 26 points as William Academy’s leading scorer in its win over J. Addison. The guard will have to be similarly effective for William Academy to generate offence effectively against a tough defensive matchup in Crestwood.
Crestwood Prep holds a 4-4 record and is ranked No. 3 in the East, just behind William Academy. Crestwood is coming off a dominant performance against Bill Crothers S.S., winning 103-65. A win in this matchup would be crucial for Crestwood’s chances of closing the gap in the standings, as they would move ahead of William Academy with a victory. Myles Dehaney has provided a spark for Crestwood on offence recently, with the point guard leading all scorers with 28 points in the team’s most recent win over Bill Crothers. This support has created a dynamic attack for Crestwood, as guard Christophe Tshibola is also averaging 22.8 points per game this season.
Saturday’s game is a crucial matchup for both teams as they vie for positioning in the Men’s East Division. Can William Academy continue to hold second place, or will Crestwood Prep move ahead in the standings?
