LEAGUE ANNOUNCEMENT: OSBA Expansion and League Format for 2022-23 Season

THE OSBA IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE SEVEN NEW PROGRAMS (TWO WOMEN’S, FIVE MEN’S) AND LEAGUE FORMAT FOR 2022-23 SEASON.

Ontario Basketball and the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association are pleased to confirm the field of competition and format for the 2022-23 season. Two new programs will join on the women’s side, and five new programs have been added to the men’s side.

OSBA Women’s League

15 programs that competed in the 2021-22 season will return for 2022-23. In addition, two new programs will join for a total of 17: Fort Erie International Academy (Fort Erie, ON) and Legacy Prep (Woodbridge, ON). Central Tech will not return for the upcoming season.

Capital Courts Academy are the reigning Women’s Champions from 2021-22.

Following a successful return-to-play in the 2021-22 season, the women’s format will remain the same for 2022-23. The two new programs will be automatically placed into POOL B.

POOL A will compete in a 19 game regular season - home and home within their pool (14 games), and two crossover weekends (4-5 games). 

POOL B will compete in a 20 game regular season – home and home within their pool (16 games), and two crossover weekends (4 games). Dates for the crossover weekends to be determined. Crossover games will not count towards league standings.

PLAYOFF STRUCTURE/RELEGATION - The top four programs in POOL B will play-in against 5th to 8th in POOL A based on regular season record. The winners of a best 2 out of 3 series will go to the 2023 Final 8 Championships and solidify their spot in POOL A for the 2023-24 season.

The 2022-2023 regular season is scheduled to begin October 11, 2022.

The 2023 Final 8 Championships will be held at Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre (TPASC) on March 2-5, 2023.

OSBA Men’s League

16 programs that competed in the 2021-22 season will return for 2022-23. In addition, five new programs will join for a total of 21: Fort Erie International Academy (Fort Erie, ON), Inspire Academy (Vaughan, ON), Kennedy Prep (Windsor, ON), Orangeville Prep Provincial Team (Mono, ON), and PEDSDMD Elite (Mississauga, ON). Southwest Academy will not return for the upcoming season.

Fort Erie International Academy are the reigning Men’s Champions from 2021-22.

With the expansion of the Men’s League, the 2022-23 season will operate under a new format.

Fort Erie International Academy (Fort Erie, ON), Orangeville Prep (Mono, ON), Royal Crown (Scarborough, ON) and United Scholastic Academy (Scarborough, ON) will receive automatic placement in POOL A. The remaining 12 returning programs will compete in a play-in tournament (dates to be finalized) for the final four spots in POOL A. The five new programs are automatically placed in POOL B.

POOL A will compete in a 19 game regular season - home and home within their pool (14 games), and two crossover weekends (4-5 games).

POOL B will be placed into two divisions: one consisting of 7 programs, and one consisting of 6 programs. All programs in POOL B will compete in a home and home within their division, and one game each vs opposing division programs. POOL B will also compete in two crossover weekends (3 games). Dates for the crossover weekends to be determined. Crossover games will not count towards league standings.

PLAYOFF STRUCTURE/RELEGATION – The top four programs of each division in POOL B will play-in to compete against 5th to 8th in POOL A based on regular season record. The winners of a best 2 out of 3 series will go to the 2023 Final 8 Championships and solidify their spot in POOL A for the 2023-24 season.
