No surprises in OSBA Men’s Quarter-Final action

Top seeded teams came away with wins to advance to semifinals on March 9

The OSBA Final 8 Tournament continued on Friday, March 8 with the Men’s Quarter-Finals in Toronto at Ryerson University’s Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The top seeded teams in all four games came away with wins to earn their spot in the semifinals on Saturday, March 9.

 

TRC Wolfpack (3) vs. RISE Prep (6)

Number three TRC Wolfpack knocked off number six RISE Prep in an emotional battle for a spot in the semifinals. TRC got off to a quick start behind 11 first-quarter points by Sabry Philip. RISE had a strong second quarter, scoring 32 points to tie the game 51-51 at half. Philip continued to fill the basket into the third quarter, putting up eight of his game-high 29 points before having to leave the game due to an ankle injury. RISE tried to rally together in the fourth, with Rahmir Moore putting up nine of his team-high 28 points. TRC held firm and punched their ticket to the semifinals with a 104-97 win.

 

Thornlea (4) vs. Father Henry Carr Prep (5)

Number four Thornlea Thunder got a big boost from their bench against number five Father Henry Carr Prep. Thornlea had an early lead thanks to a healthy +13 first-half rebound advantage and 14 points from Victor Radocaj. The Thunder shutout FHC Prep in the first five minutes of the third quarter to go up 58-37. Powered by Kobe Lam and his team-high 20 points, FHC Prep went on a 16-5 run to close the game, but it was not enough as Thornlea powered through to a 89-76 win. Thornlea’s Keeshawn Barthelemy led all scorers with 23 points.

 

Ridley College (2) vs. Vaughan (7)

Number two ranked Ridley College got out to a quick start over number seven Vaughan by going on a 19-4 run, including seven fast break points. Noah Wharton put up 14 of his game-high 26 points and two assists in the first quarter. Vaughan cut the lead in the second, trailing by 12 at the break. Ridley played solid defense throughout the second half to put Vaughan away 80-65. Ridley’s bigmen Jaden Bediako and Anthony Daudu both recorded double doubles in the game with Bediako shooting 7-12 from the field. Ryan Brooks lead all Vaughan scorers with 20 points.

 

Orangeville Prep (1) vs. Central Tech (8)

Number one ranked Orangeville Prep led beginning to end against eighth-seeded Central Tech. Orangeville had a 27-18 lead thanks to Tyrese Samuel’s seven first-quarter points. Orangeville kept up the tough defense through the rest of the first half, holding Central Tech to only 30% shooting and leading 50-34 at the break. Despite repeated efforts by Central Tech, Orangeville kept up their pressure and continued to build on their lead throughout the second half. Orangeville came away with a statement win with seven players reaching double digits. Central Tech’s Kalyem Liburd-Mullings led all scorers with 23 points, adding 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

Ridley College (2) vs. TRC Academy (3) at 2:00 p.m.

Orangeville Prep (1) vs. Thornlea Thunder (4) at 4:00 p.m.
