OSBA SEASON PREVIEW: ATHLETE INSTITUTE PREP

 Athlete Institute Prep Season Preview

Athlete Institute Prep was one of four teams in the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA) to finish last season with a winning percentage above .500. They won the OSBA championship, during the inaugural, 2016-17 season. Last season, the team finished with a 17-3 record. Two of their three losses were at the hands of hometown rivals Orangeville Prep and the remaining game was against TRC Academy.

Athlete Institute has had a busy off-season retooling their roster as four key seniors graduated and moved on to the NCAA. Oshae Brissett (6’9 SF, Mississauga) and Howard Washington Jr. (6’3 PG, Buffalo, NY) will play together at Syracuse University, while Jahvon Blair (6’3 SG, Brampton) will attend Georgetown University and Jordan Lyons (6’7 SG, Brampton) will be making the move to Southern Utah.

Despite the loss of four key players, Athlete Institute looks ready to compete and contend for the OSBA Championship. Notable returning players include Addison Patterson (6’7 SG, Mississauga), who competed at the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders Camp (https://www.basketball.on.ca/site/index.cfm?DSP=Section&ID=101&ACT=Display&NewsID=3019) this summer, and Ben Hendriks (6’10 C, Mississauga), who not only joined Patterson at Basketball Without Borders but also won a gold medal with Team Ontario at the Canada Summer Games (http://www.ontariosba.ca/news_article/show/822039?referrer_id=3072240).

In addition to these veterans, Athlete Institute Prep had numerous high-level players commit to their team. The most notable acquisition comes in the form of Luguentz Dort (6’5 SG, Montreal, QC) from Conrad Academy, Florida. Dort is the 23rd ranked recruit in ESPN’s top 100 class of 2018 (http://www.espn.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/playerrankings/_/class/2018) and he was the Co-MVP of the 2017 BioSteel All-Canadian Game (http://www.tsn.ca/video/biosteel-all-canadian-basketball-game-team-red-153-team-white-133~1098082), a game in which he scored 30 points on 75 percent shooting. Dort brings versatility to the wing position, as he has tremendous athleticism and continues to improve his jump shot, something that was evident from his shooting performance at the BioSteel All-Canadian Game.

Dort will be joined by fellow commits, including his AAU Brookwood Elite teammate, Shawn Barthelemy (6’0 PG, Montreal, QC), as well as Kobey Lam (6’3 SG) and Sam Rautins (6’3 PG) from St. Michael’s College in Toronto. These new additions will certainly fill the void at the point guard and wing positions left by the graduating seniors.

The retooling of Athlete Institute Prep has occurred both on the court and on the sidelines; Charles Hantoumakos will take the reins at the head coach position as he joins Athlete Institute after several successful seasons as head coach of Bill Crothers.  Hantoumakos will be joined on the sideline by Faiz Ahmed and Brandon Ennis.

Look out for Athlete Institute Prep as they appear ready to compete this season and contend for the 2017-18 OSBA Men’s Championship.
