It was the final game of the regular season for both Lincoln Prep And Guelph Prep so it was important for both players and coaches to end of a strong note. In their last game, Lincoln Prep had their 4-game winning streak snapped by TRC Academy but a victory today would solidify them at 4th place. Guelph Prep struggled all season but it was important to remain competitive in every contest and gain experience for future seasons.

Despite putting the first points up on the board, it was a difficult start for Guelph Prep. Due to their frequent turnovers, they often ended their possessions without even having the chance to get a shot up. Conversely, Lincoln also had to take a few trips down the floor before finding their offense as a result of them settling for outside shots. Eventually, Lincoln strung together a few baskets but went cold for a large portion of the quarter once they hit 10 points. Guelph was trailing but the work they’d done on the defensive end kept them afloat until they could get within 3 points. In the final minute, however, Lincoln went on a momentum-seizing run and finished the quarter on a 6-0 run and led 16-7 going into the 2nd quarter.

Both sides were still looking to get comfortable but as the 2nd quarter continued, Guelph began to fall behind by an even larger 16-point gap. They struggled to generate a consistent offensive attack and their increasing number of turnovers prevented them from generating any kind of rhythm on either side of the ball. Lincoln’s great play from the end of the first continued well into the second quarter as they dominated all aspects of the game. They moved the ball very well in half court sets and often ended each trip down the floor with a great shot opportunity or free throw shots at the line. They also continued to control the rebounding battle and limited Guelph to only one shot with each possession. Although Guelph’s scoring had improved since the first quarter, Lincoln’s offense was too prolific and their lead grew to an even larger 22-point difference.

Coming out of halftime Lincoln was ahead 38-16 and had no intention of taking their foot off the gas. Shots dropped with regularity and after 3 consecutive 3-pointers, they were well on their way to a 15-3 run that only furthered the already large gap between the teams. It was a balanced team effort as everyone on Lincoln contributed to scoring.  For Guelph, most of the same problems that plagued them in the 1st half were still present after the break. High percentage scoring options eluded them and they still had trouble keeping the ball in their possession. When the quarter came to a close, they found themselves trailing by a whopping 28-66.

With Lincoln having such a sizeable lead going into the fourth quarter, they simply needed to maintain a reasonable level of play and use the clock to their advantage. They accomplished both those goals and more as they attacked the basket aggressively as if they were the team that needed to make a comeback. They hustled each possession for defensive stops and quickly went the other way for transition opportunities. There were virtually no holes in their game for Guelph to exploit and Lincoln steamrolled their way to an 83-39 victory at home.

Lincoln Prep ends the season winning 5 of their last 6 games and their 9-5 record solidifies them at the 4th overall spot on the season. Guelph Prep finishes a 1-12 record, which places them at 8th in OSBA standings.
